March 2016 Meeting Highlights

We had a small group of 5 out sewing during but we finished 4 quilt tops!   The bindings were also finished on two more comfort quilts so will be added to our growing collection to display at our show.

We had 20 members at our evening meeting and we talked about the quilt show and the new executive for May 2016.

Quilt Show News

-The entries are starting to come in and I have 62 quilts entered so far.  Hope to get that many more in the next few weeks. The deadline is April 15 for entries.  We usually display 120 to 150 quilts at the show.
-Our posters have arrived and members offered to hang them in Denare, Cranberry, Snow Lake, Duck Lake, Swan River, Winker and Winnipeg.  Sheri will get the rest posted around town and The Pas.
-We will need all our members to volunteer time at the show as we have many stations that need to be filled.  We have two Admissions desks, the Lug Nuts Raffle table, the Toonie Parade, the In House Raffles, and the Kitchen.
-We also need members to bring 3 dozen cookies for our tea.
-Set up will be on Thursday April 21 at 9am.  The more volunteers that show up the quicker the set up goes.
-Quilt Drop off is at the Community Hall on Thursday April 21 between 10 am and 1pm.
-We will be offering a Beginner class again to new members and this time we will use the Quarter Sections pattern to make a baby quilt.  The dates for those classes will be June 11 and 18.  Current members that wish to take the class are welcome to join and can make a larger size.
- Road 17 N from Winkler and Mami's Quilt Shop from Duck Lake will be our vendors.


Now to the 'Show Drama" I have been dealing with this weekend!  City Hall called me to say they have double booked the hall on our dates!  They asked that we switch to Creighton and I said "NO". I will stand firm on this as we have had these dates booked for years and it is their issue to resolve with the other group.  The only location our show fits is at the Flin Flon Hall.  Changing dates was also suggested to me by City Hall and I said that is not an option at this point as we have two vendors books and they have other activities planned on other weekends. We also have our posters printed and on display.   To say the least I am not a happy camper having to deal with this at this time! But I will stand firm and I told them that.

New Executive

We will be having our executive elections in May as the April meeting will be busy with quilt show business.  Thank you to Moira and Iris for taking on the Kitchen duties and  Cynthia for taking on the Library.  The position of Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer will be open and I'll start the begging to fill those positions soon! I would also like to have a Program Committee of about 4 to 6 members.

Snowbirds

Our guilds Arizona snowbirds wanted to show off their 'winter' fashions!   I was told they said "We Miss You" as the picture was taken.   Enjoy the rest of your winter ladies!  

February 2016 Meeting Highlights

We had another small group of ladies out during the day to help with our projects and we accomplished a lot!   We finished both Biscuit quilts and they are tied.

Also got the bindings on two other comfort quilts.

We decided in the evening meeting that this Snowball quilt would make a great door prize at our show.

Our evening program was about adding borders, demonstrated by Audrey and myself.

Business

We will be having our Guild Retreat on March 11 + 12 and happy to inform you that Wendy from Fabriculous in Swan River will be joining us and setting up a small shop.  Please let all your quilting friends know so that stop in an shop too!
We passed a Pot Luck sign up sheet around and if you were not at the meeting but are coming to the retreat just bring a dish and join in! Supper will be around 6:30 on the Friday.

We discussed the idea of making Quilts of Valour quilts as well as quilt for the refugee family that will be coming to Flin Flon.  Oh Canada Stonehenge fabrics have been ordered to make these quilts.

Quilt Show Reminders:
-Hoping to have all the Quilt Show Entry forms from the member that are here at the March Meeeting or the April UFO day on April 9. If you out of town the final due date for the forms is April 15.
-We have volunteers to run the Toonie Parade.  If you have any items to donate please contact Iris Bailey or Moira McDonald.
- Members are reminded to bring 3 dozen cookies to the show.
-Sign up sheets for quilt show dutes were out and will be again at the April meeting. We hope all member take a few shifts sitting a the various stations we have set up.

We had a discussion on when to hold our next show and the members were open to the idea of having it in the fall of 2018 as so many members are away in the winter which makes preparations difficult. We will have more discussion on this at the next meeting.

January 2016 Meeting Highlights

We were a small group for the first meeting of the new year as many of our member have left the cozy comforts of our Manitoba winters for a few months of warmer living.   For those that have stayed to tough out the season we are happy to report it has been mild winter so far.

During the day we were busy finishing up the two Biscuit quilts and they just need to be tied now. Binding is being hand stitched on a few quilts and bordering being put on others.  We are determined to finish up the 17 UFO projects the guild has in the cupboard, yes we counted and the number is 17!

Here is our Garlic Knot quilt all finished.

 
We are getting plans in place for our quilt show in April.  There is still one job that needs to be taken care of and that is our Toonie Parade.  If you want this fundraiser to be part of the show we need a volunteer to take on this job, there were no volunteers at our meeting.  Please contact Audrey, Sheri or myself if you are interested in this job.

I made a poster for our show and will send it out to the printers soon.  Getting this picture was a bit challenging as I didn't want any marks in the new fallen snow!

Sheri has chosen her Presidents block and it is the Star Fling pattern.   The guild is providing the background fabric and pattern, members need to use a medium or dark fabric for the star.

Our program for the evening was hand applique and we will be finishing the block we started with our hexi flowers. The guild is providing the background fabric, stem and leaf fabric.
