February 2014 Meeting Highlights

There were 25 members and 2 guests present at our February meeting.
11 ladies attended our UFO day on February 15, it was a quiet and productive group!
The guild will be hosting a retreat on Friday, March 7th and  Saturday, March 8th. There will be a potluck supper at 6pm on the Friday and all members are welcome to attend.
More UFO days are planned for Saturday March 22 and Saturday April 12th.

Quilt show entries need to go to Kathy Schwartz by April 15th.  Everyone should try to enter at least one quilt.  Sign-up sheets for jobs at the quilt show were made available.  Try to choose at least 2 or 3 spots that you can help out with.  Everyone should also be thinking of ideas for donations to the Toonie parade.

More dates to mark on your calendar for after the quilt show are:
  • May 10th and 24th have been booked for a UFO day and a free motion workshop.  The date for which event will happen on which date will be determined.
  • June 7th and 14th are booked for a UFO day and a Beginners with Mentors workshop, again the order of dates will be determined

This first 3 quilts were presented to a family that lost their home in a fire on Christmas Eve 2013.  Thanks to Nadine and Marg for organizing this and contacting the family to find out what needed to be made.

More Guild comfort quilts finished.

Our Churn Dash block are coming in and they look great!  You can still turn these in next month.

Highway 10 Designs has a new Hexagon pattern out called Lug Nuts.  The paper pattern will be available at the March retreat and meeting!

Now onto Show and Tell, we had a lot to share this month!

Our members have been very productive this winter and made for a great Show and Tell!   Remember the Quilt Show is in a few months so get those UFOs done!

Churn Dash Block - Instruction Revision

There is small fix you need to do for you Churn Dash blocks.  As I was making mine yesterday I realized the HST blocks finish at 4 1/4", not 4 1/2".  So here is the simple fix we came up with.
Here is how your pieces will looks following the instructions.  The center square and double rectangles are 4 1/2" square and the HST squares are 4 1/4".

All you need to do is trim the center square and the four double rectangle blocks to 4 1/4".   Then you can assemble the quilt block with no problems.

When trimming the double rectangle block take 1/8" off each side so the center seam stays in the center.

Then trim 1/4" off the end.

Your pieces will now all be 4 1/4" square and sew together nicely.

The finally block will measure 11 3/4" square.
