April 2013 Meeting Highlights

Thirty Two members and Four guests turned out for our April Meeting. Most of our snowbirds have returned.  This made for a full day of fun and quilting, with so many of our members home for the summer.

Correspondence

An invitation was received from the Northern Health Region to attend a volunteer luncheon on April 22, 2013.

Below are Three of our comfort blocks sewn into quilt tops.  Now to get them quilted.  If any of our members want to take a quilt home to practice their machine quilting, or if you want to assemble a quilt from some of our fabric, please talk to Audrey or Kathy.

This quilt top sewn from some of our comfort blocks, is being completed and will be sent to a wounded Canadian soldier, as a quilt of Valour.

Mystery Quilt Update

I have had a few questions about Aprils instructions for our Mystery quilt project so thought I would post picture to help.   Above is the work from April's instructions and you will have 64 units ( 42 for smaller quilt) in each pile.
Below is a photo of what you will have leftover after finishing Aprils instructions.  You'll have 64 (42) triangle units and 64 (42) HST units ( from bag A) left that will be saved for May's instructions.
Hope that clarifies any of your questions.  There are no errors in the instructions so make sure you follow the numbers required for each step.

Can you guess how many blocks this quilt will have?  :)

Snow Birds

Our snowbirds are all beginning  to return home from various wintering places around
North America.
Rae and Raye will be returning very shortly, but in the meantime they
have sent a picutre of them both enjoying the Buddy Holly
show on Vancouver Island.

You know what happens when the Snow birds start coming home?
We get spring!
See you all on Tuesday.

March 2013 Meeting Highlights

We had a very small group of members turn up for our full work day at the church.
I suspect a few of them were enjoying sunny weather somewhere else, and I know by the previous post there were a few at the quilt show in Arizona

Twenty three members and 1 guest turned out for the evening meeting.

A newsletter from CQA was received with a challenge for new and renewing memberships. With each membership you can enter your guild for a draw.   Starting April 1st there is a Virtual Marketplace on the CQA website with many deals for members and non-members.

Out comfort block for March and April is turning out very nicely.  The exploding pineapple  block.

The March retreat had 9 members enjoy the pot luck supper and 17 participants during the 2 days of the retreat.
The entry for the Northern Juried Art Show on May 16th to the 18th in Churchill MB is almost ready for submission. Thank you to Kathy S for the great quilting job.
Sandra D made a motion to offer the guild project for sale  at the Northern Juried Art Show.

New Business

The next UFO will be on April 6th from 9 to 4.  The cost is $10 per person.

There will be some Stack and Whack projects going on if anyone wants to learn the technique. Bright fabrics with well defined values and pattern repeats of about 12 inches with 8 repeats work best.

Some upcoming quilt shows are in Lethbridge AB on June 14th and 15th. Also in Winnipeg MB on May 24th to the 26th.

The guild is gathering a collection of metallic fat quarters and Moda Marbles or Moda Mates yardage if anyone has some to donate for future projects.

Program

A Cutting Corners ruler demonstration was done by Evelyn B and Audrey N using the Starlet and Hot Flashes patterns.  Robin M sewed two samples of the Hot Flashes pattern.

Kathy demonstrated month three of the Double Trouble Mystery Quilt.

Here is one of the Hug Me Quilts our members completed this winter

And here are some of our completed Comfort quilts.

Here are the quilts Nadine has completed as part of her personal challenge to make community service quilts.

Arizona Quilt Show

You might recognized some of our guild members enjoying the heat and sun down in Arizona, I was told it was 30' the day this pictures was taken.  They were able to take in the Arizona Quilt Show and I'm sure they have found a few quilts shops as well.  Enjoy your remaining time in the sun ladies as you'll be in for a shock when you get back as winter is still waiting for you here!! :)
