October 2015 Meeting Highlights

It was a cold, wet and even snowy October meeting but that didn't keep our die hard member away! During the day we worked on finished the second yellow hand appliqued circle quilt as well as starting another Black, White and Blue Disappearing Nine patch but this one we added pop of orange to it! We will share pictures of that one next month when it is complete.

Rae has been doing some fall cleaning of her sewing room and brought 3 large bins of fabric for us to go through.  The guild took all the flannel and we cut up 4 kits to make Strip and Flip quilts which I took to make on my longarm.

We also had a crew working hard on printing, cutting and stapling our raffle tickets for next springs quilt show.  We hope that each member will sell at least two books before the Quilt Show.

We had a draw for the tulip blocks and they were won by Eileen Morran.

The program for the evening was EPP ( English Paper Piecing) demonstrated by Audrey Neufeld.  Member were asked to make a Hex flower in bright solid or tone on tone fabrics and were given the papers along with the instructions.

Next months Program is Regular Old Paper Piecing ( you know the kind you either love or hate!) and it will be demonstrated by me.   We will hand out our favorite Ice Cream Cone pattern, which makes great kids/baby quilts, and also give out the cone fabric with it.

Craft Sales

We will be unveiling our Lug Nuts Raffle quilt at the Flin Flon Arts Councils Craft Sale on Saturday November 7.   A sign up sheet for volunteers to sit at this table was passed around at the evening meeting as well as a sign up sheet for our table at the Northern Country Crafters Sale in Creighton on Nov 7 as well.  We will be having our One Day Raffle of our Christmas quilt there.  Here is a photo of that quilt.

If you were not at the meeting and would like to sit and sell ticket please contact Sheri for the Flin Flon sale and Kathy for the Creighton sale.  I believe there are a few open spots for both locations.

Fall Retreat

Our Fall Retreat will be on Friday October 30 and Saturday October 31.  We will be having our Pot Luck supper again and if you can't join us for the retreat but want to come for the supper just bring a dish to share and you are welcome to share in the fun!
We will have a special guest this time, Shari Dyck from the quilt shop Road 17 N in Winkler, Manitoba will be joining us. She will be setting up shop in the foyer and joining us at the retreat.  Wonder what projects she will be working on?  So again if you can't come to the retreat make sure you stop by and check out Shari's shop.   It is important that we support our Manitoba quilt shops as we want them to keep there doors open.  Nothing beats walking into a quilt shop, its so much nicer than shopping for fabric online.

Christmas Party Reminders

Our Christmas party will be on December 15 and we will have our usually activities.  This year we are asking you to bring a 1930's Reproduction fat quarter for our game.   We will have our Silent Auction which is a great fundraiser for our group so please bring your donations for the auction to me at the November or December meeting.  We are also still collecting place mats for Meals on Wheels in December.

Show and Tell

( Note - Some members were wondering why some Show and Tell pictures are missing from the blog.  Well there is a simple answer to that question...sometimes photos don't always turn out and are too blurry for the blog.  If this happens to one of your Show and Tell items you are more than welcome to send me a photo of your quilt and I would be happy to add it to the next months post.)

Happy Quilting

Great Tip on Burying Your Quilting Threads

Thought this was a great tip on how to bury your threads when machine quilting.  I usually backtrack to lock my stitches but sometimes if you want a more polished look and this is a great way to do it.

September 2015 Meeting Highlights

We had 30 members and one guest present on this rainy guild day.  It was the perfect day to be inside sewing.   We had a special visitor this meeting, Maryann from Road 17 N in Winkler brought some precuts and kits for us to shop.  I think everyone enjoyed browsing all the items and most left with a bag of goodies!  Also made finishing a few guild quilt tops during the day much easier as we border shopped and completed two quilt tops!

First was the Apple Core and the Grunge border fabrics were perfect for this top.

Next we finished one of the Circle Applique tops where we learned how to buttonhole stitch by hand.

Old Business

On Saturday Sept 12th we held a 6 Hour Quilt workshop organized by Marg Faktor and completed 14 quilt tops to donate to the Christmas hampers.

We received a letter from the Northern Country Crafters that the Creighton Sale will be on Nov 7 so we have booked a table to sell raffle tickets on one of our Christmas quilts.  This is the same day as the Flin Flon Craft Sale so will be need all our members to sign up to sell tickets as we have two venues to man.   We will have the sign up sheets at our October meeting.

Reminder that the Fat Quarter for our Christmas Exchange will be 1930's Reproduction fabrics.  We will also be collecting placemats for Meals on Wheels in December.
Also think about what you can donate to the Silent Auction at our Christmas party, that is one of our big fundraisers.

New Business

Marg Faktor will be sharpening scissors at October Meeting during the day for $2.00 a pair.  If you need you scissors sharpened bring them during the day.

The next Guild Retreat will be on October 30 and 31.

Program

Marg Faktor demonstrated the Biscuit Blocks and members were asked to take kits home to make a group of blocks.  If you took a kits don't forget to return them with the group number on it.

Completed Comfort Quilts

This Strip Quilt will be donated the First Baby born in October for Breast Feeding Month.

Rae invited members to make a Picnic Pinwheel block using bright kids fabrics.  Pattern was handed out.

Show and Tell

Some of the members are heading down to Swan River this weekend for the Highway 10 Designs/Fabriculous Retreat!  Hope everyone has a great weekend!

August 2015 Meeting Highlights

The evening meeting had 23 members and 1 guest.  During the day a few members worked on the Apple Core quilt while eight members practiced their Free Motion skills in Kathy's class.

The Spring Tulip comfort quilt blocks are looking really good and will make a beautiful quilt.  You still have another month to work on your blocks.

A good selection of toddler/youth age flannels have been growing in our guild cupboard thanks to our generous members donating fabric. This spring members cut them into strips for me to take home and make Stitch and Flip quilts on my longarm.   The result is these four toddler comfort quilts.

The next UFO day, Saturday September 12th, has now be changed to a Workshop day and the project will be Baby Stitch and Flip quilts made on our domestic machines.   The fabric and batting will be supplied by the guild and member can either bring their machine for sewing or just come and help with the cutting and pressing.  The more hands the better!

It was announced that the theme for the Fat Quarter Exchange at our Christmas party will be 1930's Reproduction fabric.
Members are also reminded that we will be again collecting Placemats for Meals on Wheels at our Christmas party.

Shari Dyck from Road 17 N in Winkler as offered to send up some quilty goods with her employee Maryanne to our September meeting and set up a small store for us to shop at on guild day.   Then for our October 30th and 31st Retreat Shari will be joining us and setting up a small booth so we can shop her store again!  We are thrilled that Shari is willing to come all this way to join us!

The program for the evening was a YouTube video demonstrating a hand basting technique using boards and a table top. No need to crawl around on the floor.  Here are the videos.
Basting video Part 1   Basting video Part 2

Programs for the next few months are:
September - Biscuit Quilts demonstrated by Marg Faktor
October - English Paper Piecing ( EPP) demonstrated by Audrey Neufeld
November - Paper Piecing the Ice Cream Cone Block demonstrated by Kathy Schwartz
