January 2012 Meeting Highlights

There were 21 members present and no guests on a very cold January evening.

Correspondence included thank you cards from Marsha & Lucas (Rainville?), for the beautiful quilt presented for being the last baby of 2011. George S. thanked the Guild for the beautiful placemat he received over the Christmas Season.

Many members have returned there recent comfort block, as seem below in three different settings.

Also some of the members are bring in the presidents blocks for Kathy. They are really looking very nice on the board.

We worked on comfort quilts in the afternoon. This is one of the quilt tops we threw together from the fabric in the cupboard and our club cutter.

Kathy and Audrey have been trying to get the members to take home comfort quilts to machine quilt.
Below is one of the quilts looking for a home. If you haven't taken a quilt home in a while please consider doing so, as we gave away most of our quilts at Christmas, so now we have to work on new ones.

Library Report:
New magazines included Fons and Porter, Quiltmaker, and Quilter’s Connection. This edition of Quilter’s Connection had a feature article from Kathy S and Lori S on fabric dyeing. Nice work ladies.

January is the deadline for recipes for the Cookbook – and we are taking suggestions for a title. Please fwd your suggestions to Robin via email at jensmom1946@hotmail.com you could win a Cookbook.

Deadline for the May Retreat at Bakers Narrows is the end of January, contact is Sandra Buchberger - her phone number is 472-3783 and email is sblake@mailme.ca.

The comfort block was The Antique Tile block and was demonstrated by Audrey N. Please remember to use tone on tone fabrics, that are jewel tones, if possible, no large prints.

At the Christmas party Rae B. presented a Challenge that was for every Guild member to make one comfort quilt in the next year. For every quilt you donate the Guild will enter your name into a draw. The first of the completed quilts for Rae’s Challenge were turned in

Quilt donations made in the past year were reviewed – the list was lengthy. Great work volunteers!

Quilt Show this year is April 20 and 21, cut off for entering a quilt in the show is April 9, 2012. Entry forms have been emailed to you.

Donations for the Twoonie Parade Baskets for the Quilt Show please contact Marg Lyle (mblyle@hotmail.ca) if you have an item you would like to donate.

Examples of items for a basket for a quilter include (fat quarters, rulers, machine gloves, binding clips, quilting book, simple pattern). A snack basket could use donations of homemade jams, jellies, salsa, pickles. Do you have a bag and runner that you might like to donate? Funds donated will be used to round out baskets of say thread.

Kathy S demonstrated the different batting she uses for her long arm quilting. She also handed out a list of these different battings, which are available for purchase from her quilting company The Tamarack Shack.

Christmas Party 2011

We and 39 members and 18 guests to our annual quilt Christmas Party.

Happy cookie time started at 6PM, with our members bringing alone a beautiful variety of cookies. Yum!

They started right into our silent auction as you can see below.

Minutes from the November meeting were not read and most business was set aside for the evening so we could proceed with our annual Christmas party.

A special thank you was given to Marg H for all the time and effort she has given looking after our Comfort Quilts.

Information on a quilt retreat to be held at Baker’s Narrows Lodge on May 4-6, 2012 was presented by Sandra Buchberger (Cranberry Portage) and Sue Harper (The Pas). (Participants can work on own projects or make a table runner or topper in a class taught by Marie Minaudier. Cost for the Retreat is $290.00and is due by January 31 ,2012)

The craft for the evening was an Origami 3D Flower which was led by Yvonne H

Sixty-six placemats were donated for the Meals on Wheels program.

Our coffee money donation will be given to the Vocational Training Centre.

The Membership draw was won by Marg H

The Show and Tell draw for July to December was won by Yvonne H

Kathy S won a copy of the Northern Alphabet Book. This draw was for those who had made a block for our Northern Alphabet Banner.

The fabric raffle draw was won by Sue H, a guest from The Pas.

The Snowman Quilt draw was won by Sandra D.

The X block quilt is finished and will be taken home to quilt by Kathy

Robin took the extra fabric from the X block home and created this lovely quilt.

Our craft for the evening was large paper flowers to be used as table decorations at our quilt show this spring. They should be just great on our tea tables.

To finish off the evening we had our annual fat quarter exchange in the form of the paper bag game. Donna's game story is in a previous post.

To close Rae B issued the following challenge to our members:

(Rae's Challenge is for each guild member to make a comfort quilt in 2012.

It can be an infant, child, teen or adult male or female.

Try a new pattern or one of your old favorites.

The guild is always available to help with basting, pinning, batting, backing or even fabric if needed.

A draw will be held at the 2012 Christmas party. Each quilt donated gives you a chance for a great prize.

So one quilt-one chance but two quilts gives you two chances!)

Christmas Party Paper Bag Game

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE THE QUILT SHOW

And all through the house, every creature was stirring, including the mouse. All the quilts had been hung by the right corners with care—in hopes that a large crowd would soon be there.

All the right forms were completed and pinned to each piece—the left, lower label displayed for hanging ease. Nothing left to chance right before the big day.

Right near the entrance, our new challenge debuts- right front and center to ensure the best views. Visions of ballipops and jellyrolls dance before our eyes- each one its own masterpiece that fills the right size. With the right fabric color, and right theme displayed, the creators have shown us an awesome parade.

All through the hall there arose such a clatter, we sprang from our chairs amid all the chatter. Away to the frames we flew like a flash—hanging and clamping and righting the sash.

Quilts to the right, quilts to the back, runners and placemats to the left of the tea- tables at the left of the stage. Weaving among all the awesome displays,-- right, left, right again—it’s all so great, this talent portrayed.

Our raffle is always a really big hit—a chance to have the right ticket drawn to win one of the beautiful items our guild members have created. There won’t be a ticket left for there is something for everyone—the right size, right age-group, and the right color combinations.

Audrey and Marg can be counted on to teach us new things, using the right rulers, right patterns, right templates, right techniques, and if anyone is left with any questions, they are right there to help with the right information and right suggestions until no doubts are left.

We always serve cookies to all who attend, but of course we only serve cookies that have left out the calories, left out the cholesterol, and left out all harmful color and additives.

So you see, every two years we put on a right jolly old show, and in a twinkling of an eye, we are heard to exclaim as the last quilt left on the frame comes down---“Let’s all dash-a-way, dash- a- way, dash- a- way all—back to our drawing boards, for two years is just right around the corner. Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night”

Guild Christmas Party Reminders

Our guild's Christmas party will be on Tuesday December 20, our regular guild day. Here is an outline of all the activities and draws we will have at our party.

During the afternoon if you have an item for the Silent Auction please bring it to Nadine before the evening meeting so she has time to organize that activity.

We start our evening activities at 6:30 so we can enjoy some cookies and visit with friends. If you have a special festive cup to bring along so we can reduce the amount of sytrofoam cups we use that would be great. 7:00 is when we start the Silent Auction and have a quick business meeting. We will have some special guests this month that will give a presentation on a special event that is happening in the spring.

We will have a Fabric draw as well as a draw for the Snowman quilt. Tickets $2.

Our craft will be lead by Yvonne and it will be......well let's keep that a surprise! Lets just say no glue or glitter will be harmed in the making of this craft :)

If you have made placemats for Meals On Wheels please bring those.

We will have our Show and Tell draw, our Membership draw, and a bonus draw for the members that participated in the making of the Northern Alphabet Banner quilt. Myrna Guymer donated a copy of the book it was inspired by and we will have a draw for the book.

We will end the evening with our Fat Quarter Story so make sure you have your wrapped red fat quarter and if your bring friends make sure they have one too so they can play our game.

One last note, we asked for suggestions for a title for our Recipe Book and we will postpone that until January. If you have any suggestions and will not be at the January meeting please pass your ideas onto Robin or Maxine this month.

Robin has sent out reminders if your on the cookie list for December.

November Meeting Highlights

It was a snowy November day but that didn`t prevent the 26 members and 2 guests from attended the meeting.

We had a great day on November 5 at both craft sales. The winner of our Snowman Quilt was guild member Wanda Sproxton.

We held a Quilt Show Meeting and most of the jobs have been filled. It was decided that the next theme for our 12 1/2" block contest for the show is going to be Insects. The Twoonie Parade is going to be organized a bit differently this time. We will have 10 baskets with different themes and Marg Lyle and Cathy Dyck will be coordinating this part of the show. Members can get together in groups and pick a theme to donate items to create a basket and let Marg know what theme you have picked and who has donated to the basket.

Plans for our Recipe book are going well and Maxine would like all the recipes sent to her by January 31, 2012.

We will be participating in the Cranberry Portage Craft Show on Dec 3 and selling quilted items and tickets on our Bargello quilt.

Here are the 14 quilts we are donating to the Elk's Christmas Hampers.

Guild's Show and Tell.

The President`s Block for Kathy was demonstrated by Audrey. The guild provides the batik background fabric and members are asked to provide the 6 different batik scraps for the rest of the block. When four of these blocks are put together they make a Scrappy Jewel Box block.

Now for an excellent Member`s Show and Tell. From big projects to small, we love them all.

October 2011 Meetings Highlights

We had a total of 35 members come out to our October meeting.

Some of our members completed and returned the Old Italian square. As you can see they are a very interesting square. If you haven't completed yours yet, don't worry you can return it completed for the November meeting.

Marg demonstrated the final stage of the paper bag quilt.

The afternoon and evening demonstration included the use of the x Block ruler. The members were putting these lessons to use by constructing the black and white quilt below.

A reminder was given about the dates when we will be selling tickets for our raffle quilts.

(On Saturday November 5^th we will be selling tickets on our Bargello quilt at the Flin Flon Craft sale as well as selling tickets on our Snowman quilt at the Creighton Craft show. If you have any items that you would like to sell at the Creighton sale please let Kathy know so we can arrange to have them at the table. We have all the volunteers we need for the Creighton table but we need a few more for the Bargello table. )

A Quilt Show meeting will be held at 5pm at our November Guild Day. (If you have signed up for a job or would like to still help we hope you can make it. We will be going over the jobs that need to be done, block contest theme, challenge ideas, so if you have any ideas you would like to share or questions about the job you signed up for please come.)

We had a large show and tell for the evening as well. So get your tea and sit back and enjoy all the hard and creative work from our members.

Fall Retreat

It was a beautiful fall weekend for our retreat, we even had the doors open so we could enjoy the fresh air while we sewed. We had a record number turn out but still plenty of room for everyone. A total of 28 member joined us for the pot luck supper which was delicious as always.

I had to comment on this next picture. Barb, our guild photographer, just bought her first sewing machine and started her first quilting project. Great to see you in front of a sewing machine and the camera Barb!!

On Saturday October 1 we held an Open House as part of the Culture Days activities in our town. We had about 35 visitors drop by to see what we were working on. Here are pictures of our display in the main lobby that welcomed in our visitors.

September 2011

We had 36 members and one guest turn out to our September meeting.

Below our President Kathy proudly displays our new guild table banner, this is one of three. Which will be used to display our name when we have a table set up to sell tickets or for demonstrations at various community activities.

Our new Mystery quilt for this fall was introduced by Marg F.

The members lined up to select the squares for their paper bag quilt.

The library has some new stencils, the autumn copy of The Canadian Quilter, and the Sept/Oct issues of the Quiltmaker and Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting.

43 Touch quilts were donated to the Northern Lights Manor. Kits to make more quilts are still available.

A reminder was given about the Retreat being held on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1. (Fri 9 am till?? Sat 9-9) We will participate in Culture Days on the Saturday by holding an Open House. Members are asked to bring a finished quilt to put on display.

A table has been booked at the Flin Flon Arts Council Craft Show on November 5 to sell tickets on our Bargello Raffle quilt.

The meeting date for October will be changed to Monday, October 17^th due to the flu clinic being held at the church.

The Northern Country Crafters Craft Sale will be held on Saturday, November 5^th. We will be raffling our snowman quilt at the sale.

Here is another one of our quilts ready for a raffle.

. Audrey demonstrated our new comfort block for October and November called the old Italian block. later in the evening Marg F demonstrated cleaning and care of your sewing machine. She also sharpened
scissors at the meeting. She will be at the October meeting to sharpen scissors again. The charge is $2.00 per pair.

Our quilt show is this spring and a quilt show committee needs to be set up. Members who are interested in heading up one of the many jobs were asked to sign the sheet.

We will again donate baby and toddler quilts to the Elks for their Christmas Hampers. The guild will make some and donations from individual members are welcome. Items should be turned in by the November meeting.

We will again do the place mats for Meals on Wheels for our Christmas party. The colour for the fat quarter exchange will be red.

Social Services could use more Kid’s Bags.

August Meeting

We had 18 members and two guest for our rainy day August meeting. During the day we finished piecing another Snowman quilt and started putting together the Disappearing 4-Patch Jelly Bean quilt. A few members were also working on our Touch Quilts. We now have 37 completed and they just need labels and will be ready to donate to our local care homes next month.

The latest news from our business meeting was a reminder about our next Retreat on Friday Sept 30 and Saturday October 1. We will also be participating in Culture Days by having an Open House on Saturday Oct 1 during our retreat. This will allow the public to view a variety of quilting projects as well see where we meet.

We will be starting a new three month project in September for a Scrappy quilt led by Marg Faktor. If you are interested in participating you need to be at the Sept meeting or have a friend bring your fabric and collect the new fabric for you. You are asked to bring 220 three inch squares of 100% cotton fabric and a brown paper bag or a container to collection your fabric in. These squares should be medium-dark or dark in colour and try to avoid prints with white, yellow or cream. About 14 squares from 15 different fabrics would work or just dig into your scrap bins and collect as many different dark colours fabrics that you can cut into 220 3" squares, whatever works for you.

Here is the quilt, we are doing the lap size only.

If you are confused as to how this will work what happens is everyone participating will bring their 220 squares and put then in small piles on the table. Participants will then walk around the table collecting one square of fabric at a time from the outside edge piles until everyone has 220 square of fabric. When a pile on the outside edge is emptied a new pile from the center of the table is slide into that empty spot and this continues until all the fabric is gone. I am curious how many trips around the table it will take to collect 220 squares!! It should be a lot of fun :)

There will be different options for borders and the amount of background fabric needed. You can use one fabric for the background or two fabrics like Marg did on this quilt. This will be discussed in October.

Our program was How to Use the GO Cutter system.

Social Services are requesting more Kids Bags, we have copies of the pattern available if you do not have one.

Septembers program will be How to Clean your Sewing Machine and then collecting our fabrics for the New Scrappy Quilt Project.

We are keeping Marg really busy this month as she has also offered to sharpen scissors again for us. She will be set up during the day and evening and the cost is $2 a pair. She will be offering his service again in October if you forget your scissors or can not make it to the September meeting.

This was Lori's last meeting before she moves and when she brought out her hand dyed bamboo scarves to show us before the meeting and the ladies all asked "are these for sale?" So they all bought one as they are beautiful reminders of the great time we have with Lori at the guild! Don't worry ladies ...she will be back to visit I'll make sure of that.

July Meeting

We had a small turn out of 20 members and one guest for our July meeting but it still was a great day to quilt!
Our Little Hex's are looking fantastic and the blue pinwheels are going to make a wonderful quilt. You still have time to return any of your comfort blocks that might be sitting around your sewing room as Audrey pointed out we have not put together any quilts using the comfort blocks she has organized since taking on the role of Program Director ( that is a whole year!). We plan to start working on those comfort quilts in August as well as baste a few quilts.

June Meeting

We had a very busy meeting in June with members working on our Touch Quilt projects during the day. We had ten quilts completed and about 50 kits made for members to take home to work on.
We were also busy working on our new Bargello Raffle quilt for our next quilt show. Lori was very determined to have it finished by the end of the day and it was! The trip to the ER with a needle protruding out of her finger didn't even get in the way. ( I changed the wording on the poster above her head to apply to the situation!)

We had 34 members and one guest for our evening meeting. Our program for the evening was Machine Applique and Audrey demonstrated a few techniques.

We had a fantastic Show and Tell so lets start with our guilds quilts!

Meeting Date Change Reminder

Just a reminder that our July meeting date has been changed to Tuesday, July 12 as the church is having their Vacation Bible School on the week of our usual guild day.
There will also be an executive meeting at 5pm, everyone is welcome so please come and share your ideas for new programs with the executive.
Looks like the forecast for Tuesday is hot and sunny so you might want to enjoy the air conditioning indoors at the meeting :)

Touch Quilt Project

Just a reminder that at our next meeting is on June 21 and we will be working on the Touch Quilts starting at 9am and going until 5pm. You can bring your sewing machine if you are interested in sewing and quilting the tops together or just come to help organize and baste the quilt tops. If you are donating textured fabrics please cut them into 6" squares and bring them at the church during the morning so they came be used that afternoon. We are using cotton or poly batting in the Touch quilts. If you have scraps of batting that you would like to donate to this project please piece them so they are 40"x40" square and the same size with backing pieces.

The Touch Quilts we make will be donated to local seniors with Alzheimers.

Northern Juried Art Show Entry

There were 36 members present and no guests at our May meeting.

Kathy showed our members the completed comfort quilts returned to the meeting.

These two quilts were made from our member's orphan blocks.

Kathy and Eileen are displaying the quilt made at the April meeting, using the twister ruler. What a lovely quilt.

The ruler was so addictive that some of our members came to to meeting with projects they completed using the ruler.

Organizing and sewing quilts for the Touch Quilt project in support of the Alzheimer’s Society will be the activity for next guild day (June 21 from 9 am to 5 pm. Donations of 6 inch block of various textured fabrics are welcomed.). The guild received a donation of fabric from CADAC. Some of this fabric can be used for the Touch Quilt project.

Sherri is holding up a sample of a touch quilt.

Our winter wear blocks were sewn together, and once the quilt is quilted and bound, it will be donated to CADAC for their raffle.

Some of the little hexs blocks have been turned it. This photo should help you with ideas for your own little hex square.

The new comfort quilt block for June and July is easy pinwheels, as demonstrated by Kathy and Robin.

We had a small turn out for the meeting, but that didn't dampen any one's enthusiasm. We had lots of show and tell. So sit back and enjoy.

Meeting for April 2011

There were 37 members present and one guest at our regular April meeting

Here is Kathy holding up three comfort quilts made from the orphan blocks donated by some of our members. It looks like they are ready to go out and be machine quilted.

The Creighton Copper Fair is being held on September 9^th & 10^th and there is a Quilting Retreat in Duck Lake, SK from July 22,23, & 24, for any interested members.

Several new items were added to the library including the current issues of Quiltmaker, Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting and Quilter’s World, the pattern for the recent Mystery Quilt called “Stars for Audrey”, and a book titled Let’s Twist and its accompanying templates – the Twister and Lil’ Twister. (If any members are interested in purchasing these templates they should let Heather know ASAP.)

It was decided at the last meeting to rent out the GO cutter to members on the morning of Guild day in two hour sessions at a fee of $10. A sheet will be available on the table from now on if you’re interested in signing up to rent the GO cutter. The new GO Die is the 8 ½” Rag Square. A binder of resources for the cutter is also available.

It was decided that the raffle quilt for 2012 will be a Bargello pattern and the fabric for this quilt was displayed.

Sheri Fox presented information about the Alzheimer’s Society’s “Touch Quilt Project” which will be an activity that our Guild will be pursuing. Sheri is requesting donations of 6 inch squares of textured fabrics. (Bring to next meeting. Examples are fun fur, denim, fleece, minky – avoid cotton)

The comfort block is Anita’s ArrowHead and is continued from last month.

The program for the evening was Creative Little Hexes, demonstrated by Audrey Neufeld. Kits are available.

All the Northern alphabet banners have been completed and are ready to enter into the Art show.

April 2011 Retreat

The Friday and Saturday retreat was a success once again. With a large number of our quilters showing up for both days or just for one.

A lot of work was completed. Some of the ladies worked on completing their mystery quilt tops from this winter. They are all very lovely and such a variety of colours.

The kitchen was very popular for cutting out our squares, for visiting, and of course for laying out our wonderful potluck supper.

There was a lot of discussion around the colour selection and the layout of blocks.

Some of our ladies brought their hand quilting and entertained us with interesting stories.

We even had a couple of our snow birds return for the Saturday of the retreat.

March 2011 Meeting Highlights

There was a total of 32 members and 3 guests out for our meeting in the evening.

The turn out for the day was a little smaller than usual, but we were productive.

All the Alphabet squares were squared up and pieced, layered and pinned for quilting.

· They require simple outline quilting and need to be completed before the April meeting so they can be completed in time for the Northern Juried Art Show.

Six fabric leaf bowls were completed to fill the request from the CQA for Quilt Ontario which is being held in London, May 25-28. Audrey also completed a wall hanging/table topper from guild fabric that had been used for a demonstration that will also be sent to be used as a prize.

We had a great turn out for our Comfort blocks for January February. The disappearing four Patch

Audrey demonstrated our new block for March and April.

Anita’s Arrowheads is the new comfort block. Please use masculine fabrics and colors for the additional fabric (blues, greens, browns.)

Some of our comfort quilts were returned after being quilted by some of our members.

Lori showed us her latest fabric dying projects.

· Our retreat will be held April 15-16 at Northminster United Church. We will have a potluck supper on Friday night. The day will begin at 9:00 a.m.

· The guild Go! Cutter will be available for members to rent during the morning of guild days. Two time slots are available 9-11 am or 11-1pm at a cost of $10 per two hour session. A signup sheet will be available at each guild meeting. The GO! Cutter will be available for guild projects in the afternoon.

· Guild members can receive a 10% discount on fabric at Bliss Fabrics and crafts.

Lori and Kathy demonstrated the final instruction for the “Trust Us” mystery quilt. Pre-cut Interfacing strips are available to all guild members participating in this project. Lynn F. won the draw for hand dyed fat quarters from Dyemondz for having her project up to date.

Guild Meeting February 15, 2011

There were 30 members present and 1 guest on a cold snowy winter evening.

There was lots of work done on comfort quilts in the afternoon.

The SPCA come to the church in the afternoon to be presented with the quilt we made for their next raffle.

This is a photo of all our Northern Alphabet blocks.

All of our Northern alphabet blocks have been returned except W.

We reviewed the disappearing four patch comfort block once again.

Lori and Kathy discussed the February instructions for the mystery quilt. Participants who bring their tops completed correctly and up to date to the next meeting will be entered into a draw for some hand dyed fat quarters.

The program for the evening was binding techniques. Audrey did the demonstrations.

· Entry forms and information for the Northern Juried Art show that is being held in Flin Flon, June 2-4, 2011, are available from the Guild. Entry deadline is April 15.

· Our first “Blog Book” was purchased. We now have a printed record of our blog from the beginning of 2007 through to the end of 2010.

· The group was surveyed for interest in a Spring Retreat. The first choice was April 15 & 16 if the church is available.

We had an amazing amount of show and tell for the evening. With each lady proudly displaying her quilt. We heard interesting stories to go along with many of the quilts.

January 2011 Meeting

There were 38 members present and 2 guests on a very cold evening.

The library has two new books -- Rotary Cutting Revolution and Spinning Pinwheel Quilts. Five stencils have been placed in the library. Magazines received included the Jan/Feb Quiltmaker, Winter 2011 issue of The Canadian Quilter, Jan/Feb Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting,and the Winter issue of Quilter’s Connection,

This is a reminder that the Northern alphabet blocks are due in February.

The program for the evening was demonstrating various cutters and rulers ( our new christmas gifts).

Below are two different systems. One is a ruler that allows you to ride your cutter along a

ridge in the ruler to keep from cutting crocked. The other is a sharpener for your rotary cutting blade.

The members voted to purchase an Accuquilt go Cutter and some basic dies and mats. It will be very handy to cut up our fabrics quickly and accurately for our comfort block kits.

Lori and Kathy demonstrated the next level of the Mystery quilt, which is putting together starts. Members were cautioned not to assume they know the next step and work ahead.

Audrey demonstrated the next comfort block which is available in a kit from the guild. It is a disappearing four patch. Members are reminded to please press the seams open for this patch to reduce bulk.

We had some show and tell in the evening, but not as many as usual, since most members were busy making things for Christmas.

Quilt Christmas Party 2010

41 members came out to our Christmas party and they brought along 20 guests. It was a really nice group for a Party.

Lorie demonstrated the next step in the 2011 Mystery quilt. I don't think she promised and end to the flying geese. Did she?

Nadine led the group in a game of "Quilting Acronyms", which was very challenging.

Sandra S. Demonstrated the craft for the evening, which was a figure skate tree ornament.

The winner of the toy black viewer's choice award was a tie between Glenna D and Nadine M.

The evening ended with our traditional Fat Quarter exchange game. The colour of the fabric was blue. The story was written and read by Donna H.. It is written our further down the blog list.

Once upon a Quilt Guild.
Left of Ontario, right of Saskatchewan and somewhere right along the left margin
of the province of Manitoba, there is a right lovely little quilt quild. Our fearless
leader, Kathy, is right on top of things-she keeps us right up to date with fun
projects and never is heard to utter---LEFT, RIGHT,LEFTRIGHTLEFT. Audrey is
her right hand man and has left nothing to chance. She always leaves us
reminders right on the table where we can pick up all the instructions for the
work still left to do. Lori and Marg F. are right in the thick of things, teaching us
the right way to do things with all those left over pieces of fabric. Marg H. is our
resident expert in color co-ordination. "NO, move that block to the left, no- to
the right-Just a minute-move that one back to the left and take the left lower
block and bring it up to the right corner. There that is the right color match. 11
Lorna G and Sandra D make a great team on the sewing machine. They organize
the right order and all goes right along swimmingly-until Lorna is left with a
right-angled square in square instead of a pinwheel. Then the poor soul who
pinned the patch has left the building, and Evelyn slowly slides her left hand
across the table, right in front of Lorna, and that patch disappears faster than the
nine-patch-never to be seen again.
I will try to stay right on track with the remaining time left.
Show and Tell is the favorite part of our meeting. It is where we all get to see the
right fabrics put together in the right way to form the right pattern for the right
person for the right reason at the right time.
Cookies and a cup of coffee or tea is just the right mix for us all-even though the
cookies go right to our thighs, right to our hips, and there is always a little left
over to go right to our -well anyway, I digress.
This very special guild is chocked right full of many talented and helpful women
who will gladly spend time with anyone who needs their help. New members are
"always welcome and we miss all of those who have left us.
Nothing more of this story is left, so enjoy the fabric that you hold right in your
hand. If I did it right, you will now have a new addition to your stash. If I did it
wrong, you are left with your own fabric. If this is right, everyone please pass to
your right- no to your left. There-that's right.

November Meeting

November has been a busy month for the guild. First the Craft Sale on Nov 6 were we sold 374 tickets on our Irish Chain quilt and the winner was Betty Smith of Flin Flon. Then our retreat on Nov 12th and 13th ( see post below Trunk Show). Then our regular meeting on the 16th with the wonderful Trunk Show by Rae and Evelyn ( see post below).

Some of our complete comfort quilts were displayed at the evening meeting including this one that will be given to a young girl going through Chemo right now.

The next set of instructions for our Mystery quilt were demonstrated by Lori and myself.

A few Toy Blocks have been turned in early as well as some placemats for Meals on Wheels.

Trunk Show

The idea of having guild members give trunk show for our programs has been tossed around for awhile and last meeting we finally had our first one. Talk about setting the bar high!! Past presidents Rae B. and Evelyn B. took us through the guilds history of projects and challenges. At the end the tables were piled high with all their beautiful quilts and they received the guilds first standing ovation!

November Retreat

On November 12th and 13th our guild held a retreat at the United Church. This time we tried something new and had a Pot Luck supper. That went over very well and we had enough food for the next day's lunch and supper. Not only are we great quilters but we sure know how to cook too! I think that will become part of our regular Retreat activites from now on.

November Meeting Reminder

Hi, everyone. This Tuesday, November 16th, is Guild and Meeting Day. How time has flown by this past month!

Morning & Afternoon: Guild and Personal Projects. For guild projects we hope to get started with the designing and piecing of the SPCA quilt, layer our Disappearing Nine patches and work with the Orphans.
Supper time: There will be an executive meeting during the supper hour staring at 5:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to join in so bring your supper and offer your opinions and ideas.
Evening Program: A Trunk Show (Who??) The trunk show will start at 7:00 pm with the usual business meeting to follow. This way all the trunk show items can be displayed at the same time as Show and Tell items.

Remember to bring:
Silent Auction items you may have for the Christmas Party. Give them to Nadine.
Any completed 8 ½” Toy Blocks. All Toy Blocks will be displayed at the Christmas Party and prizes awarded. Give you completed blocks to Lorna Heuchert.
Recipes for any cookies, treats and food dishes you have brought to guild functions in the past and if you are bringing cookies for November. Give them to Robin.

DO NOT PANIC.....that's our job!

So maybe you shouldn't have trusted us so quickly! GULP! Okay here goes...... Lori and I have just discovered a itsy bitsy teeny weeny error in the cutting instructions to our Mystery Quilt. **hides behind hands**

We are very sorry!

The good news - the cutting instructions are fine for the Lap and Twin sizes so if you picked one of those sizes take a sigh of relief, sorry to alarm you. Keep up the good work.
The bad news - you guess it.... Queens size instructions has the error, but only in one of your beautifully labeled baggies. The mistake is with the background fabric in baggy I. It said to cut WOF 2 1/2" wide but I should have said 3 1/2" wide. Honest mistake, right?

If you have not cut your fabric then please change this in your instructions or contact Lori or myself.
Now if you have cut your fabric all is not lost, honest, if there is a way to figure out how to fix this Lori and I will find it....~~trust us~~!
I am looking at my Queen size fabric CUT and have figured out that I have enough extra fabric from buying the required amount to cut 4 new strips and can piece together the 3 more I need.
So if you have your fabric cut for the Queen size quilt please bring your fabric to the meeting and Lori and I will help you figure out the best way to approach the fix.

Oh more good news....the strips you cut at 2 1/2" could be used for binding. See things are looking better already!

So please spread the word about this error to other guild members that are participating in our Mystery Project.

I think it is time for a bit of chocolate... the nausea experienced when discovering the mistake is starting to settle down a bit.

I want to start this post with a big THANK YOU to one of our guild members. I was planning on mentioning this at the guild meeting but totally forgot as the quilts she worked on were not at the meeting.
So Thank-You Marg H. for all the work you have done on our Comfort Quilts, especially the 17 Ragtime quilts you wash, mended and found homes for. This bouquet of flowers is for you. I'm sure you are glad to not have the flannel fluff all over you and your house anymore!

Below is a picture of 6 of the comfort quilts that will be donated to a family of 6 orphans, each one labeled with the childs name.

We had a fantastic response to our request of Pet themed blocks to make an SPCA raffle quilt. These blocks will be made into a quilt in the next two months so we can have it ready to donate in the spring.

We will be participating in the Northern Country Crafters Show at the Creighton Community Hall on Saturday November 6 from 10am to 4pm. This is the one day we will be selling tickets on our Irish Chain quilt so please stop by and get a few tickets, the draw is at 4pm that day. If you have any quilted items you would like to sell please contact me (Kathy) and bring you items to the Hall on the 6th at 8:30.

We have a Retreat planned at the church on Nov 12 and 13 from 9am to 9pm each day. We are having a Pot Luck supper on the 12th so if you find you can make it please come with some goodies and join in the fun!

We will be having an executive meeting at 5pm on November 16th ( guild day) and it is open to all members.

Reminder that our December meeting date has changed and it is now on Wednesday December 15th.

Activities planned for the Christmas party are the Christmas Craft, 8 1/2" Toy Block Contest, Scrappy Challenge, Blue Fat Quarter Exchange, Silent Auction and Meals on Wheels Placemats donation.

And don't forget to bring a guest to the Christmas party!

Part 2 of the Mystery Quilt was demostrated and all the members were excited to see we were starting with Flying Geese!! Okay maybe we were the only ones excited but we tried this new 'No Crumbs' method and gave it two thumbs up. Hope the guild members participating do too.

The new Northern Alphabet quilt has started and members randomly picked there letters. There are a few letters left so it is not to late to join in.

Culture Days

On Sept 24 and 25 we had a Quilting Station set up at the Creighton Sportex Rink as part of the Culture Days Art Show and Artist Demostrations. Friday was for the school programming and I was surprised at the number of kids that did stop by and try to free motion. We had small quilt sandwiches made up for anyone who wanted to give it a try and then we donate them to the local SPCA for cat quilts.

As you can see it was VERY cold in that rink and I didn't take my jacket off until after lunch.

Just a reminder to all that our guild meeting day is Tuesday, October 19th. We will start our day at 9:00 a.m. and our meeting at 7:00 p.m. Come any time during the day or come just for the meeting. All of us are looking forward to seeing you on Tuesday.

Morning: Personal projects and guild projects. If you plan to work on your own projects, please bring your machine.
Afternoon: “Get to Know Your Sewing Machine”. Bring your machine and your manual. Guild projects will continue for those who prefer to work on them.
Evening Program: Stash Mangagement—This will be a round table where we all get to share our ideas and methods of managing our fantastic stashes. Remember stashes are not just fabric, but thread and batting too. Bring your ideas, samples, pictures and anything you need to demonstrate your ideas.

Also remember:
Tuesday evening is the deadline for SPCA pet theme blocks. Blocks may be any size.
Return your Maple Leaf and Simple Pinwheel blocks for Quilts of Valour
Bring copies of the recipes for the cookies, cakes, muffins, dips and other treats that you have brought in the past to guild meetings or retreats, or are bringing to guild on Tuesday. Give these to Robin or Audrey and we will see they are compiled into a recipe book for the next quilt show. Let’s try to remember a copy of the recipe each time we bring treats to share.

The Northern Country Crafters are having their craft show in the Creighton Community Hall on November 6th. The Guild will be renting 2 tables.

The guild is having their retreat on Nov 12 and 13th at the church.

Christmas Party items to remember included: the 8 1/2 inch Toy themed block, a blue fat quarter for the game, the scrap challenge (members make an item out of just their scraps and bring it to the party) and our Meals on Wheels place mats donation.

The Christmas party will be Wednesday December 15th.

The comfort block for September/October is displayed below. More kits are available for making maple leaf blocks for the Quilts of Valour.

A new project was introduced. An Alphabet quilt. This quilt will be entered in the next Juried Art Show. At the next meeting packets will be handed out with an alphabet letter and ideas for making 12 1/2 inch blocks. These blocks will be due in February.

The deadline for the blocks for the SPCA Raffle quilt is the October meeting so the quilt can be competed before Feb/March.

Members who bring cookies for the break are asked to bring a copy of the recipe. A cookbook of these recipes will be compiled to sell at the next quilt show.

The October program will be personal and guild quilting in the morning. Getting to know your sewing machine (bring your machine and manual) will be the afternoon activity. the evening topic will be stash management. (Bring your ideas to share of how you store your fabric)

Cranapple Coffee Cake

2 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp salt

1 cup Brown sugar packed

1/2 cup oil

2 eggs

1 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 cup coarsely grated red apple

1 cup halved fresh or frozen cranberries

Preheat oven to 350

Grease and flour a bundt pan.

Combine flour, baking, soda, cinnamon, baking powder and salt.

In a large bowl, beat applesauce, brown sugar, egg, and oil.

Beat in flour mixture until smooth. Fold in cranberries and apple

Bake 45 - 55 minutes.

Cool in pan on rack for about 10 minutes. Invert and place cake on rack to cool.

August 2010 Meeting

27 ladies and 6 guests turned out this August for our monthly guild meeting.

Here is a representative from the Supportive Living Program receiving a quilt which they are donating to one of their clients.

Several of last month's Rag time Quilt kits were returned. There is still one quilt kit available to do.

Several of the ladies started a quilt bag in the afternoon. Here they are proudly displaying their unfinished projects. The pattern for the quilt bag is in the book Jelly Roll Quilts, and can be found in our library.

The September 21 afternoon program will be personal quilting in the morning, preparation for Culture days program and guild projects in the afternoon.

Marg F will be available to sharpen scissors ($2.00 a pair).

The evening will include a guest speaking on Rx for Quilters and the first part of the new Mystery Quilt project will be revealed.

The new comfort block for September and October is called a Simple Pinwheel, as demonstrated by Audry. It will be used in quilts for the quilts for Valour program. Please bring back any leftover fabric.

The program for the evening was Quilting Basics and was demonstrated by various guild members.

Old Business things to remember.

Culture days will be held September 24th and 25th. Entry forms are available. A quilting station will be part of the program.

SPCA Quilt blocks (pet theme of any size) should be turned in at the October Meeting.

A quilt retreat will be held at the United Church on November 12th and 13th.

Our Christmas party will be held on December 21st. The fat quarter exchange will be blue, the new block draw will be an 8 1/2 inch block using a toy theme and the scrap challenge. We will again be accepting place mats for donation to the Meals on Wheels program.

22 Members and one guest were at the evening meeting on July 13th

Seventeen ragtime quilts and kits were put together during the afternoon. Several kits are being taken home by members. Here are a couple of the completed quilts.

Making your own quilt bag will be the activity for the August afternoon. Complete information will follow along with the meeting reminder.

The raffle qult for the SPCA will be a Pet theme and blocks can be any size. A volunteer is needed to head this project.

Information was given out concerning the Quilt Manitoba website. www.quiltmanitoba.weebly.com This website has a lot of information about quilting all across Manitoba.

A quilting retreat is planned of Nov 12/13 in the United Church Hall.

Robin presented a Scrap Challenge in which members are being asked to make any item that they wish out of scraps and show it at the Christmas party.

Here are some of the scrappy stars that have been turned in this month for our comfort quilts. We still have another month to complete and turn in these blocks.

June 2010 Meeting

26 members turned out on a beautiful spring day to work on quilts and take in the meeting.

Audry won the ice cream cone draw and we have a great assortment of blocks to make comfort quilts.

The comfort block for June/July is Scrappy stars and was demonstrated by Robin. The background fabric is provided and the block should be done in masculine colours. The two smaller blocks or crumbs should be returned as well.

A Recycle sale (unwanted fabric, tools, thread, etc.) with proceeds to the guild will be held as a part of the July evening meeting.

Members are asked to sign up if they wish to take part in the workshop to make a quilt carry bag during the afternoon of the August guild day.

Orphan blocks will continue to be collected.

Entry forms are available for the Culture days art show to be held Sept 24/25 at the Sportex. They can be any quilted item and have been entered in other shows. Deadline for entry is Sept 7

A new blocks contest of our Christmas party on December 21 was introduced. The theme is toys and the blocks will be 8 1/2 inches unfinished.

Blue is the colour for the Christmas fat quarter exchange.

June Quilt Retreat

Thirteen members took part in our June retreat. I was a very successful event with many positive comments about the lighting, cutting area, and overall working space.

We arranged each others blocks, and discussed the arrangement, and rearranged again. Great fun.

Stories and ideas were discussed while the machines whirred.

"You're Just Going to Have to Trust Us!"

Yes, that is indeed the title of our next Mystery Quilt that is set to begin in September. You can pick up the fabric requirement list at the guild meeting on Tuesday. (If you won't be there feel free to contact Lori or Kathy and we can send you a copy.) Below are some samples fabrics that would work beautifully. This quilt looks great with a dark or light background. The key is contrast. Detailed explanations are included with the fabric requirements, but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words!

Kathy will be on hand at the meeting to answer any questions and preview any fabric selections for suitability. I will be away at Camp Whitney with the Grade 6 classes from McIsaac, so have a fun and productive meeting!

There were 38 members and 1 guest at our meeting on a very warm spring evening.

There was a large turn out in the day, where we worked on more comfort quilts.

For the evening meeting Audrey demonstrated paper piecing to both teach and refresh members old and new.
Our new comfort block for May and June is paper pieced cones. As you can see we are having and enthusiastic response to this project.

For the June workshop portion the morning will be personal projects using your own machine and the afternoon spent making guild Ragtime Quilts. If you can, please bring pre washed flannel and/or flannelet scraps that can be cut into 4", 6", 8" squares. Please keep the flannel and flannelet separated and labelled. for more information call Audrey 472 3473 or aneufeld@mailme.ca

The June evening meeting will be on marking tools. Please bring your favorite marking tool to share with the rest of the group.

Any "orphan" blocks you may have can be donated to the guild for use in future projects.

Maple leaf blocks for the Quilt of Valour are still being collected but any new ideas for a different block to use would be appreciated.

The recycle sale of unwanted quilting items will be held in July. Proceeds will go to the NSQG. These items will be ones that members no longer want or use and are willing to donate to the guild.

Below is the new executive for your 2010 and 2011 quilt year. And this happy group is your your out going executive. Notice some members are still involved in the new executive.

The Women's Resource Centre was given the applique flower quilt to use in a raffle. Four quilts were donated to the Creighton Kids First North program.

The July meeting date will be changed to the Second Tuesday (July 13) for July only.

There will be a member retreat to work on our own projects at the United Church hall on Friday June 11th and Saturday June 12th. from 9 AM to 9 PM. Bring and appetizer to share and your own lunch. We will order out our supper.

Our guild will be involved in Culture Days, a celebration of all the arts throughout our nation on the weekend of Sept 24 and 25th. Ideas of what we could do at the quilting station are welcomed.

Hi Ladies. I have accepted Sandra's invitation for more of us to share things on the guild blog. This is my first try so I hope it all works out.

I received a table runner kit for my birthday, but the pattern that came with it was just too big for my needs. I needed a new idea and found a great one at the Moda Bakeshop.

The pattern is called "Petit Fours". Check out the site for lots of free patterns using precuts like jellyrolls, charm squares etc. I had yardage but was able to easily adapt the pattern. The site give you a list of ingredients and a detailed recipe to follow. There are recipes for quilts, toys, clothes and much more. Check it out when you have the time. ~Lori

April Meeting

Well another successful Quilt Show has come and gone. I think we can all give ourselves a well desired pat on the back for such a wonderful event. If you are interested in purchasing a DVD of the show we are selling them for $5, please see Barb Harrower at the next meeting to order yours.
Big THANKS to Prairie Chicks for coming to the show to be our Merchant Mall. What a beautiful display they set up and great fabric kits and bundles!

The last month of the Mystery Project was revealed so here are Rae, Sandra and Lorna's Mystery quilts.

The program for the April meeting was the Quilt Show demonstrations by Lori, Audrey and Kathy.

During the afternoon workshop we completed a few quilt tops.

We had enough Sailboat comfort blocks turned in to make three quilt tops. Here is one of the finished tops.

The last Magic Tile quilt top in our cupboard was completed.

Our new executive will be starting in May and I (Kathy) would like to personally thank all the member who have joined the executive and guild commitees. It is nice to see a mix of new and experienced volunteers working together to keep our guild the wonderful group that it is. It is a place to share our passion for quilting and to develop great friendships.

April's Show and Tell

We had a great Show and Tell especially considering we just had a Quilt Show.

Here is Rae with her beautiful appliqued sampler, or as her sister calls it the "Bunny" quilt. ( Thanks for sharing that great story Rae). She is still working on the buttonhole hand stitching but once she is done I will really enjoy quilting this one. You know it will end up with a bunny on it somewhere!

March Meeting

31 members came out on a lovely spring thaw evening.

The day was spend going over the quilt show plans and putting together a final Quilt of Comfort and Remberance top.

Our quilt for the Art show is ready. Kathy did a beautiful job of the quilting.
The baby challenge quilts should all be turned in to Kathy for judging. Good luck to all the entries.
Here are some of the winter wear unfinished blocks, the rest csn be turned into Evelyn on Thursday April 8, when you bring in your quilt show entries.

There is still an opening for a library person for a two year term.

Members are reminded to sign up for times to volunteer for the Quilt show and for the set up on Thursday. If you haven't signed up for something and you want to help on Thursday, just show up at the Community hall after lunch. No help will be refused for Friday or Saturday as well.

Lorie and Kathy had a power point presentation, and a hands on demo at the meeting. The subject was tessellations.

Some items have been received for the Twoonie Parade and any other donations will be accepted during the quilt show setup time.
Members are asked to bring two dozen cookies each and kitchen helpers should bring their own tea towels.
Quilt racks are needed for the stage display. If you have one to lend the contact person is Audrey Neufeld.
